Baby Development Stages

Some might say the greatest joy of life is welcoming a new baby into the world. With the help of baby developmental stages, parents can better understand the process and monitor their child’s growth, making sure that they are receiving proper support during each stage. So let’s take a closer look at the awesome world of baby development and all the physical, emotional, and cognitive milestones between the first hours of life and the toddler years.

1.Newborn Stage (0-2 Months)

But in the first two months, babies are acclimating to life beyond the womb. During this stage:

Physical development: Dominant reflexes (sucking, grasping, etc.). It takes time for babies to develop head control.

Cognitive Development: They start recognizing faces, especially of their parents, and react to sounds.

Emotional Development– Crying is their main form of communication to signal hunger, discomfort, or a desire for attention.

Note to Parents: Skin-on-skin and gentle movements create connection and help soothe one another.

Infant Stage

Infants Deadline (3 – 6 Months)

Babies this age are more active and interactive.

Physical Development: Rolling, sitting with some support, and holding objects.

Cognitive Development: Babies begin to reach for and play with objects, and to respond to their names.

Emotional Development: They smile socially with frequency and love to engage in play.

What You Can Do: Provide safe toys to promote exploration and motor skills.

3.Baby Stage (7-12 Months)

It is this second half of that first year that develops quickly.

Physical Milestones: This usually includes crawling, standing and walking while holding onto something.

6-12 Months: Cognitive Development: Recognizing familiar faces, basic understanding of words, object permanence

Feelings: Attachment to caregivers deepens and they will sometimes show signs of separation anxiety.

Parents, a tip: Allow for movement, which is part of their learning; and read plenty of books to engage language skills.

4.Toddler Stage (1-2 Years)

Children become more independent and able to express themselves between 1-3 years old (the toddler stage).

Physical achievements: Walking steadily, climbing, and improving hand-eye coordination.

Cognitive Development: They start to construct simple sentences, solve problems, and will engage in imaginative play.

Emotional Development: Tantrums often happen while learning to communicate needs and feelings.

Parents advise: Set boundaries, but allow exploration and learning

Variances in Development Understanding

All children are different, and milestones can vary. If you’re worried about your baby’s development, speak with your pediatrician. If delays are identified, early intervention can be very helpful.

Supporting Your Baby’s Growth

Good nutrition is a must for physical and cognitive growth.

Provide a safe and stimulating environment.

Give lots of love, attention and interaction.

Educate yourself about developmental milestones to help you notice and celebrate accomplishments.

Baby development stages are a wonderful surprise and learning experience you would never want to miss out on. By recognizing and accommodating each stage, you can help your baby thrive and reinforce the connection between you.
